13. The other me

Come downstairs, I'm waiting for you." My cell phone displays Gabriel's number. The message seems clear enough, but I don't understand. It's 840 in the morning, I'm still drying my hair and I should leave this minute if I don't want to be late for work. I run to the window, hastily pinning my hair up into a chignon, and from my third-floor apartment I see Gabriel, down on the pavement, leaning against an enormous, gleaming black motorbike. Looking up at my window, he notices my face and, with that indifferent attitude that annoys me as much as it fascinates me, holds up a metallic grey helmet towards me. This makes even less sense. I put on my boots as fast as I can, a million different ideas running through my head, grab my coat and my messenger bag, lose fifteen seconds looking for my keys, and hurtle down the stairs that lead me right to him. Such a crazy guy. This unpredictable man who's been under my skin for the last two months. This billionaire in the world of wine, a formidable business man and talented photographer, who knows how to do everything and do it brilliantly. This tall, blond man with the body of a Californian surfer, who can be elegant, wild, mysterious, passionate, adorable and exasperating, all at the same time. I still have no idea why he's interested in me, twenty-two, a lowly, little intern living a simple life, but I know I wouldn't trade places with anybody for anything in the world. There must be loads of women lusting after him. Apparently he doesn't see any reason to explain why he's on my street this February morning. Gabriel places a cold kiss on my cheek, undoes my chignon with his agile hands and sets the helmet on my head. He secures the strap underneath my chin, plunging his icy blue gaze into mine. The contact between his fingers and my skin makes me shiver.

"You're not going to work today. I've taken care of that with Eric. Or to put it better, you're going to be working for me. Have you ever been on a motorbike before Hold on to me and follow my movements."

He pauses, then adds, with a cheeky wink that turns my legs to jelly I know you're pretty good at that."

Just seven little words and seven thousand butterflies start fluttering in my stomach. He turns around, puts on his helmet, straddles the engine and holds out his hand to help me get on behind him. I shyly slide my hands over his black leather jacket as he revs up the motor.
